The Biology of the Green lipped Mussel
SPAT NZ (spatnz.co.nz) is where it is all happening. Research + Industry = lots of Mussels.
Excellent link here and here. Make sure you have a good snuffle around this site and look at videos, mulitmedia, info sheets, videos etc.
Try here too get some general information on the biology of the Green Lipped Mussel.
Here is some current research on Green Lipped Mussels.
Here is a brief abstract which summarises finding from an investigation of waterborne cadmium toxicity in the green-lipped mussels.
Here is some mussel research and findings of others that may be useful.

You must keep a log book. This is essential to prove the authenticity of your work, show your skill as an investigator, and record all your findings. You cannot carry out an investigation unless you understand the biology of the organism being investigated. Remember, information about the biology will also be used to write the introduction and discussion in your report.
Make sure you use an accepted method of referencing your information and provide a bibliography. - Carry out a quality practical biological investigation into an aspect of an organism’s biology with guidance.
A quality practical biological investigation enables a valid conclusion to be reached. A valid conclusion is relevant to the
aim and justified by correctly processed data. The characteristics of a quality investigation would normally involve:
- a statement of the purpose – this may be an aim, testable question, prediction, or hypothesis related to the biology
of the organism.
- a method that describes: for a fair test: a valid range for the independent variable, the valid measurement of the dependent variable for pattern seeking:
- a valid collection of data how other variables will be controlled and/or how other factors that might influence the investigation will be taken into account collecting, recording, and processing data (quantitative or qualitative) to enable a trend or pattern (or absence), relevant to purpose of the investigation, to be determined
- interpreting and reporting on the findings with a valid conclusion reached based on the processed data in relation to the purpose of the investigation.
An accurately drawn graph speaks a thousand words. The correct graph should be used for the display of data. They should be stand alone with full title, descriptive labels, appropriate increments etc. ·
A discussion considers the significance of the results of the investigation in relation to the biology of the organism.
To achieve with Excellence
A comprehensive discussion will consider: The investigation as a whole and the significance of the results in relation to the ecological niche of the organism and relevant scientific information and supported by the findings of others.
The validity of the investigation in terms of either the validity of the conclusion by using statistical methods such as mean and standard deviation, confidence intervals, standard error, or other appropriate test; Does the animals response in realtion to the changed variable make biological sense or the reliability of the data by consideration of factors such as how sources of error were eliminated, how limitations were overcome, or how the effects of bias were reduced so that the actual relationship between variables investigated was fairly represented.

Compared to almost every other animal out there, the male seahorse is the most deserving of a #1 Dad coffee mug. Unlike most males in the animal kingdom, male seahorses carry their young. Not just one or two -- we’re talking hundreds and even thousands. Once the young are ready to be birthed, they erupt from the father’s pouch in a matter of seconds in a series of violent contractions. Check out the birthing seahorse below. |
